Guide to Mindful Playa Prep (for Control Freaks)

Sometimes we forget that with almost 70,000 burners in Black Rock City, not all of us are the free-spirited, take-things-as-they-come, let-the-universe-show-me-the-way type of people we burners are projected to be. If you are like me - ultra-organized, a bit high-strung, and somewhat of a control freak - you may struggle with playa-prep. There is just…

From a Newbie to a Newer-bie

Packing Lists from Burn.Life

Thank you to Burn.Life for their wonderful Preparing and Attending guides.

Here's the link to their packing lists, nicely done!

There's no such thing as a 'definitive' packing list for Burning Man. What you're bringing depends on what kind of thing you're staying in (tent? yurt? box truck? RV?) and what your requirements are both for your individual survival and enjoyment, and for how you're going to contribute to your camp (if you're part of one) and Burning Man at large.

Having said that, here are a couple packing lists to help guide you.

Fire In Balance

Born: 2014 Fire has been an intrinsic part of the human experience since the dawn of man. Control of fire is what separated us from the animals. Fire in Balance takes that control and literally turns it upside down. Our desire is to create an immersive experience for large numbers of participants to witness…

Join the Black Rock French Quarter

Looking for a camp to join or participate with?

The Black Rock French Quarter village is a collection of camps devoted to visceral experiences, such as the elegant cocktail lounge and live music venue known as the Golden Cafe, the Black Rock Bakery famous for its wedding cakes and liquid nitrogen ice cream, the Broken Angel Bathhouse that provides custom soaps and scrubs to visitors, and Cafe de la Fin du Monde serving gourmet coffees.

Our members include builders, artists, musicians, bartenders, chefs, performers, bakers, costumers, and just about anyone else seeking to create a unique experience to share with the Black Rock City community.

And this year, we are doing something special...

Gigsville is not a place. It occupies no location and has no address. Though its citizens come from all walks of life, have jobs (at least most of them), eat regular food, keep pets, sleep and all the things that normal people do, they are essentially a community of like-spirited folk who like to dress weird and blow things up. They do this kind of thing on a decently regular basis. They came into existance in the bleak days before the 1998 Burning Man Festival.

Since that time their numbers have grown into the hundreds, adopted a Code Of Conduct and now have their dark little hearts set on world domination. But since they are a relatively unorganized bunch as a whole, that will probably not happen any time soon. In the meantime they are content with regular outings into the desert to perform improvised fire haikus over a B.A.F., race rocket cars made from Twinkies and occasionally some of them will breath fire and drink too much scotch.

But they are not all about peace and love. There is also art. Some of it is 2, 3 or 4 dimentional but mostly Gigsvillians are their own artform.

"We're not here to accomplish anything greater than creating opportunities to spend time together a few times a year and inspire each other from time to time. There is not now – nor has there ever been - any great cabal dictating what people can and can't do here, except for matters of obvious public safety, and even that has been a kangaroo court at best." - Buck Down, Mayor Emeritus

Gigsville's Code of Conduct

Playa Surfers found its home on the playa in 2006 when founder Donald Cassel claimed stake to a spot on the Esplanade that was actually part of Diva Boot Camp. The following year it became officially established on the Esplanade due to the nature of our theme which offers the experience to “surf the playa” so a “beach front” location would be moist suitable.

Today the camp has grown to over a hundred people and become a main stay theme camp at Burning Man. Besides providing great surfing we also construct a full size lifeguard tower, bring Tiki Island ,a giant mutant vehicle art car that is over 50ft wide and three levels high as well as creating an infrastructure including a TIki lounge, showers , kitchen, water and power.

We also throw an amazing sunset party. Our goal is to provide a fun camp with a laid back vibe associated with the surf culture. While laid back is our vibe, the approach is the opposite. To accomplish our contribution to Burning Man a motivated and organized effort must be taken.

This is a camp that requires participation not in the sense of singing Kumbaya but actual teams of volunteers to make all the stuff we offer happen. We need build crews, mechanics ,logistics , surf instructors, organizers, etc., along with people just willing fo contribute in some fashion. Remember Burning Man is a gifting society and this is our gift. In return, no words will justify the experience that awaits you…

Most camp-specific information is private and communicated to our members only through our Google Group.

If you wish to be a member of the camp please  Contact Us.

Thank you for stopping by! We hope you join us in the dust!

Jabba Barge

No fundraising efforts at this time though the car is for rent here:!rentals/c20x9

Jabba Barge Art Car/Stage

Born: 2012

Video of the build:

The Jabba Barge is a mutant vehicle aka: Art Car, which is the brain child of Adam Mostow more than four years ago. He knew the work it would take to create the car and there would only be one person willing to take on the time it would take to make a masterpiece, fabricator and metal sculptor, David Haskell.

Charlie the Unicorn Art Car

Where art, music and mythology intersect in Black Rock City to celebrate Burning Man....

Charlie The Unicorn Art Car is an homage to the most infamous unicorn in the history of popular culture.

Inspired by great balls of fire, candy cane stripper poles and rainbow glitter, this one of a kind land-yacht is as unique as the phenomenon that inspired it.

On the playa, Charlie The Unicorn Art Car is known for epic DJ sets, mesmerizing laser light shows and massive fire balls that shoot from his horn.

Charlie The Unicorn Art Car is a creation of Camp Charlie which is an L.A. based collection of dreamers, artists and adventurers who decided that "Yes, the world DOES need a 20' tall unicorn on wheels!"

Black Rock French Quarter

The French Quarter is the oldest neighborhood in Black Rock City, established in 1718 when the Black Rock Desert was first colonized by the French Queen River Company.

Black Rock City was originally centered on the French Quarter, or the Vieux Carre ("Old Square" in French) as it was known then, but as the city is recreated at a different location each year, the relative location of the French Quarter to Center Camp and other landmarks sometimes moves. The French Quarter is situated on the highest ground in the Black Rock Desert, and is the only location on playa that is not underwater during the rainy season.

Camps in this village include: Black Rock Bakery, Broken Angel Bathhouse, and Golden Cafe.
