LA Burning Man Weekly Announce/Newsletter 2-23-16

We're going to try something new: we're going to publish our weekly LA Burning Man Announce/Newsletter here in the blog, in addition to sending it out to those who have signed up for it.

That way all of y'all (or all y'all as I'd say it in Texas) can benefit from our gathering of news, events, things to participate in, things to support, and more!

If you want to sign up for the newsletter itself, just email  : la-announce+subscribe@burningman.org and it will add you to our mailing list.

Enjoy!

======== LA BURNING MAN ANNOUNCE 2/23/16 =========

INTRODUCTION

Happy Tuesday!

Wow, what a day, time flies when you’re slammed at work (no matter how much you love your job)! As we get closer to playa time, we’ll start serving up more tips and tricks on just about everything Burning Man (along with how to camp in style year-round); check out the Tips, Tricks, & Wisdoms at the end of this newsletter for some stellar tips from my old roommate (and one of the people who introduced me to Burning Man), Halcyon.

If you think I’m a playa-info-geek, I learned the ropes from him and my other roommates (holy cow!) 15 years ago! This year is my burner quinceanera! (Halcyon, I call only my most favorite smart people “geeks”, it’s meant with love and admiration...)

Now, on to our regularly scheduled programming, I mean newsletter…

  • BEquinox tickets went on sale last week, and sold out! But never fear, just like in the dust, there’s an OMG sale: The OMG ticket sale opens on March 9 at 6pm, and you can purchase two tickets via the link in the BEquinox listing below.
  • LALA Board Member Elections are still underway, only one week left of voting!  Check out their speeches from the Town Hall Meeting in the post below and vote!
  • BEquinox Theme Camp applications are now open and close on Fri Feb 26 at 11:30pm (but you can volunteer any time, link below!):
    www.surveymonkey.com/r/beqtheme2016
  • The Downtown Burner Meetup is moving dates – for March it will be on Saturday night, March 12 – they want to see if there will be an even bigger turn-out if everyone isn’t having to rush from work to get there. If you haven't made it to the Downtown meetup, it's in a private loft so is a great way to meet people and have a friendly, chill evening getting to know other burners, meeting people to help with your projects (or projects to help with!) and more. Thank you Kara and Cupcake for being such great hosts!
  • And MY GOODNESS there are a lot of reasons to get out and shake some butt! I’m tired just thinking about all the dancing there is to do.

See you on the dance floor!

🙂 Plaid & Gloria “Good Vibrations”

>>>>~~~~~ LALA BOARD VOTING IN PROGRESS!~~~~<<<<

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: This election is for the Los Angeles League of Arts (LALA). It is NOT for an LA BM Regional position.  We are looking for people who will make the foundation of the LALA organization stronger. With a stronger organization, LALA will provide for the community with greater agility.  As you vote, please think about what would make the strongest possible board of directors. This is not a popularity contest. This is to grow the Los Angeles League of Arts into the organization that best represents you and helps your dreams become realities.

Want to know more about what the LALA board is, and how it relates to the LA Burning Man community? I’ve inserted the relevant parts of the description that was published the last few weeks (when they were looking for LALA board candidates) below for your reading pleasure:

The Los Angeles Burning Man community is entering a very exciting time.  Los Angeles League of Arts (LALA) is looking for Board Members who believe in the LALA Mission and Principles (http://laleagueofarts.org/who-we-are/mission/) and are willing to be active in this community. LALA believes that our work has never been more important than it is today. We need members whose experience and involvement in the community would be an asset to LALA. It’s time for some key LA Burning Man community members to be more involved. ***This is not a Burning Man Regional Contact Position. This is a LALA Board of Directors position***

One way we combine our strength in Greater Los Angeles is through an official, legal entity called The Los Angeles League of Arts (LALA) (http://laleagueofarts.org). Much of the world requires this sort of organization to sign contracts, apply for grants, accept donations, to appear legitimate, and to remove uncertainty.

The LA League of Arts is one of the major tools that makes many things possible in our community — LA Decom, BEquinox, Blissmas, our Burners Without Borders Projects, and many smaller events each year.  It is LALA’s commitment to provide a recognizable “face” to people outside our community while preserving the glorious ambiguities valued inside our community — this is an art in itself. If this sounds like the sort of art you are interested in, we welcome you to join us.

In January 2016, the LA League of Arts [opened] nominations for 2 new Board Members to join the 7 currently in place. This is an exciting time in our local Burner community as well as the global movement — being on the Board is a great way to get in the middle of all the changes and transformations taking place.

*Here is a timeline of important dates to remember:*

*Nominations: January 12th — February 1, 2016*

*List of Candidates Announced: February 4, 2016*

*Town Hall Meeting: February 6th All Nominees get 5 minutes to speak to the community.*

*Voting (online only): February 9th – March 1, 2016

*New Board Announced: March 29, 2016*

*New Board Starts: April 12, 2016 (this will be the first meeting with the new Board)*

>>>>~~~~~ATHENA IS STEPPING DOWN FROM LALA BOARD & LA REGIONAL POSITION~~~~<<<<

Hello Fellow Community Leaders,

There is no easy way to communicate this decision.  I have decided that my time in a Burning Man leadership role is complete. I am not disgruntled or upset about something. It is just the opposite. I am elated for the future. I'm excited to see what will come next. And in order for that future to be fully realized, I need to conclude my leadership roles. And I have many.

So this will be a long  process of releasing a role to another, making sure they have whatever they need to be confident in that role, and then moving on to the next one. Below [and at this link] is my Exit Timeline. This will take over a year to unwind my energies and step back.

If you are interested in taking on one of my many duties in coordinating LA Decom, please send me an email to athena@laburningman.com.

I will remain a proud member of the LA Burning Man community and always available to share my knowledge with you when asked. I do not know what the future holds for me. I have some ideas. I need to open the space in my life for other stuff to enter and I have no preconceived notions of what that other stuff may be. It is EXCITING to be in this place in my life.

Burning ever so brightly and shining brilliantly on ~)'(~

Athena

Athena Exit Timeline

  1.               LA Decom 2015 would have been Athena’s last Decom to produce.

a.             Athena will be available for consulting and introductions for the 2016 and 2017 Decoms as needed

2.              LALA Board Elections 2016 – Athena will help coordinate elections (2 positions)

a.             At Townhall meeting 2016 – Athena will announce her intent to step down to the community and the timeline

b.             Upon inducting the two new board members in April, Athena will step down as Chairman of the Board and/or Executive Director.

c.              One of the other 8 board members will be inducted as Chairman and/or Executive Director (probably two people)

d.             All legal paper will need to be updated regarding this change

e.             Athena will remain a board member

3.              Regional Contact – Athena will resign as Regional Contact in September 2016

a.             Over the Summer of 2016 starting in May, the Five LA Regional Contacts with begin their search and nominate 5 new contacts to be vetting by BM and added to the leadership for a total of 9. These new regional contacts will come from Long Beach, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Downtown LA, and Santa Barbara/Ojai

4.              LALA Board Position – Athena will resign from the Board of Directors at the Town Hall Meeting 2017.  (The BOD has an option to extend my position on the board for one year if they deem it necessary...till 2018)

[I know I speak for many in the community when I say THANK YOU for all of your years of love and hard work for the LA Burning Man community. Truly, thanks are not enough. – Plaid]

>>>>~~~~"PLAYA LUNG" RESEARCH SURVEY~~~~<<<<

~from the JRS~

Are Burners taking proper precautions to protect themselves from any unknown effects of inhaling playa dust?

That is the question a research team of physicians affiliated with the University of California San Francisco is hoping to answer. The phenomenon colloquially dubbed “playa lung" is going under the microscope, and you are invited to participate.

If you have experienced respiratory breathing problems either during or immediately after being in the Black Rock Desert, please consider taking this five-minute, anonymous survey:

Take the survey here: http://tiny.cc/playalung

The researchers have particular clinical training and expertise in wilderness medicine, and they are looking to understand "playa lung" symptoms, time-course, and risk factors.

Results of this study could lead to improved health and safety recommendations for all future Burners, including you! While Burning Man is not affiliated with this study, we are happy to share this information with the community. All surveys will remain anonymous and no one will be able to link your answers back to you.

>>>>~~~~HELP SPACESHIP DIONYSUS ART CAR VOYAGE TO BEQUINOX 2016~~~~<<<<

Hello there future citizens of BEquinox and other art car lovers!

We want to take you on a space flight on our spaceship art car Dionysus by day and by night....

However, the real situation is we are willing to pay for more lighting, gas, etc etc. etc. and gift that to you all...but it's the transportation of the thing to and from the event that is really going to cost us way more than we can possibly rationalize spending to gift rides for. So, we thought perhaps that you all might help us out...and perhaps little by little we can collectively get this thing to BEquinox 2016!? We originally created this crazy ship with BEquinox 2015 in mind, but we didn't finish it in time. Anyway, taking it to Burning Man 2015 was a huge success and very rewarding but it also cost us a lot of equipment including a running truck. One way or another if we get enough money from this fundraiser we ARE BRINGING it to all of you and we cannot wait!! Won't you please help?? 🙂 Space fairies bless you.

THIS EVENT IS FREE. There will be a donation jar running around so just give what you can. Our friend Little D has been sidelined with an ACL repair and some back issues. Donations will bridge the ramining gaps between treatment and pocketbook. She felt it was important to provide something in exchange for whatever can be donated. This is our version of that.

Other delightful attractions include a free portrait booth, rooftop vending, mystical and nonsensical oddities, absinthe cocktails, parlour games, alluring sideshows, and much more. All ages are welcome.

TrapezeLA - Festa del Volo, featuring the SwinGrowers (from Italy)

The Syrup Loft

Downtown LA

Europe’s favorite live electroswingin' Sicilians, The SwinGrowers, are coming to TrapezeLA! Fresh off the heels of their continental collaboration with Caravan Palace, Swingrowers are a wild quintet from Palermo (Sicily) known for their mischievous mixture of crushed velvet vocals and nasty electro-manouche swing. Flanked by DJs The Gentlemen Callers of Los Angeles, The Klown, and Daniellow, and a car bomb of world-class bodacious burlesquerotti, Festa Di Volo is your stylish one night stand filled with soaring sounds and searing seduction.

Equal parts Weimar cabaret and wild speakeasy rave, Trapeze lures a bevy of underworld flappers, vamps, vipers, and villains to a bass-fueled night of jazz-age abandon.

>>>>~~~~DEATH VALLEY SUPER BLOOM!~~~~<<<<

~Because, flowers!~

March 4-6

Death Valley National Park

Furnace Creek, CA 92328

Death Valley is having a rare super bloom with millions of wild flowers blooming all over!!! Lets go frolic in the fields of yellow happiness (figuratively, be gentle to the wild flowers please). Bring your cameras!

Please make sure when you visit the park you don't hike on protected sites and trample on the plants. Also, I was told by a ranger that you are not allowed to pick the flower and take them with you. It's not allowed. I must remind everyone to clean up after themselves and not to trash the park.

Also, if you can please car pool. This event has grown so big I can't imagine how the impact of people and cars will have on the environment. Please please take care of our National Parks!

Thanks!

 >>>>~~~~6th ANNUAL BURNER DAY AT DISNEYLAND ~~~~<<<<

March 6

Disneyland

Haven’t seen LED-covered art car in a while? Finally got the dust out of that fur vest and need a place to wear it? Six months post-playa, and the default world’s got you down?

Let’s break those Burnal Equinox blues with a day in a place with its own magic – Disneyland.

We’ll meet for a picture at the castle then decide which adventures we want to experience together.

Family friendly playa wear encouraged.

TRYING SOMETHING NEW!

This month, we’re going to shake it up a bit and have the meetup on a Saturday night, as we’ve gotten lots of comments that getting to the meetup Friday night can be hard. The first Saturday is Trapeze! (and you won’t want to miss that!) so we’re moving the meetup to the second Saturday in March!

Next Meetup : Saturday, March 12

8pm till done

(Keep an eye out here and on the http://www.laburningman.com/events/ calendar for next month’s meet up date!

Location: Theory Labs @ the Brewery near Main & 5

(email plaid@laburningman.com or join the Theory Labs FB group for the actual address)

Find out details here:

https://www.facebook.com/inTheoryLabs

Theory is a loft, not a bar, so it’s easy to meet people.

It’s a great place to find stuff to do or find people to help you with stuff.

It’s run by just-married Kara and Cupcake, we’re so happy for them!

Think of it as a face-to-face version of the new Spark area of the Burning Man Website (spark.burningman.org). So if you have a camp in need of members or a project in need

of workers, this is a great meetup for you.

>>>>~~~~VEGAN STREET FAIR - YUM!~~~~<<<<

~Of course there are burners behind this, why am I not surprised? - Plaid~

Sunday March 20

11a - 7p

11223 Chandler Blvd,

North Hollywood, CA 91601

We are BACK for round 2 in North Hollywood and cannot wait to do VSF all over again!

3 times bigger than last year, you guys!!!! WOO!

Vegan Street Fair is an annual vegan food celebration where local vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants and vendors come together to serve you bite-size portions of vegan eats all in one place.

The best part? All bite-size portions are $3 max and entrance is FREE.

At VSF, you get to nosh on as many local eats as your heart desires (and your belly can hold) for street fair prices. So instead of buying a $10 plate of vegan nachos and sitting out the rest of the amazing food experiences, you get bites from one vendor, move on to the next, and enjoy all of your city's BEST vegan eats without getting full for a fraction of the price of a regular meal.

VSF is the true vegan foodie dream- EAT ALL THE VEGAN THINGS.

This event is open to the public. All ages + vegans and non-vegans are welcome.

>>>>~~~~BRIDES OF MARCH + BUNNY HOP~~~~<<<<

Saturday, March 26

11a-6p

It’s Your Special Day, again! Come dressed in your fabulous bridal finest, OR a bunny suit, and help us bring more Cacophony to LA!!!

Brought to you by the crazy folks who also “organize” LA Santacon and the Caveman Picnic, among other Cacophonist events!

This is going to be a metro-oriented year, so plan to wear comfy shoes and to have to carry all your “accessories”. Having a day-pass already on your TAP card is a good call, as is bringing cash to help settle up tabs at the various establishments we’ll be hitting.

Invite your friends! Post pictures of past years here! And remember, it’s BYOB… Bring Your Own Bouquet!!!

>>>>~~~~BIL LA 2016 - THE UNCONFERENCE FOR THE REST OF US~~~~<<<<

~This is BIL, the unconference that started YEARS ago across the street from the TED conference, and has since grown into an amazing vortex of learning that few could have predicted. - Plaid~

Friday April 1, 2016

10am-5pm: Friday set up at Cross Campus

8pm: Friday night meet and greet

(location TBD)

Saturday April 2, 2016

9am-5pm: BIL

8pm-1am: BIL Party

Sunday April 3, 2016

10am-6pm: BIL

7:30pm: post dinner for whom ever is left, to decompress and get our last ounce of BIL love in!

800 Wilshire Blvd,

Los Angeles, California 90017

Welcome to BIL LA 2016: BILding a Better Future!

BIL is a crowdsourced unconference that has been around since 2008. We have grown, we have expanded, we have made lifetime friends and look forward to making more. Each BIL is uniquely compiled by those who participate!

Unlike an event in which a small group curates and disseminates content to give to you, BIL exists "asking YOU" to come create what we are as well as what you believe is worth sharing with each other and with the world.

It exists so that each of us experience having a "say" in what gets created. We invite you to come!! Visit our event website to partake in BILding a Better Future!

Buy your tickets, Sign up to speak, Volunteer, Sponsor, Etc...

http://bilconference.com/event/bil-los-angeles-2016/

While everyone can post to this "event" page, we are doing most of our crowdsourcing and BILding on the FB Group page called BIL L.A. Group.

Please join us there! https://www.facebook.com/groups/BILLAgroup/

My ol’ roommate Halcyon is one clever burner, and over his many years burning on (and off!) the playa he’s learned a thing or 10. (You might recognize him as one of the contributors to the Burning Man blog.)

Check out his series of helpful Burning Man-related videos on his blog:

He addresses just about anything you can think of, from how to respect porto-potties to “Do I have to be sober around Rangers?” and more! – Plaid
